The Toyota Prius is one of the most durable cars on the road - taxis routinely pass 300,000 miles. But every Prius eventually asks the same question: what do we do about the hybrid battery? Here is a straight answer from people who work on them.

Warning signs your battery is fading

• The battery gauge swings rapidly - full to empty and back within a short drive.
• The gas engine runs more often and fuel economy quietly drops by 5-10 MPG.
• The red triangle of death (master warning) with hybrid system codes like P0A80.
• Weaker acceleration, especially noticeable on onramps and grades.

Any one of these deserves a proper diagnostic - individual module voltages tell the real story, not just the dashboard light.

Your replacement options, honestly compared

New OEM pack. The most expensive route, but you reset the clock completely and typically get the longest warranty. Makes sense if you plan to keep the car for many years.

Quality refurbished pack. Rebuilt packs with matched, tested modules cost significantly less than new. The quality varies wildly between rebuilders - warranty length is the tell. A rebuilder confident in their work backs it for longer.

Module-level repair. Sometimes only one or two modules are weak. Replacing just those is the cheapest fix and can buy years of life - but only if the rest of the pack tests healthy. On a high-mileage pack with widespread degradation, chasing single modules becomes whack-a-mole.

Why heat management matters in Sacramento

The battery lives behind the rear seat and breathes cabin air through a small fan. In our climate that fan and its filter clog with dust and pet hair, the pack runs hot, and hot packs age fast. Cleaning the battery cooling fan is cheap insurance - we do it as part of every hybrid service.
