The Used Car Test Drive Checklist (What to Check in 20 Minutes)

PilSStrem · Sacramento, CA · July 2026

Photos sell cars; test drives reveal them. Twenty focused minutes tell you more than an hour of scrolling listings. Bring this checklist - or book with us and we will walk it together.

Before you move: the cold start

Ask for the car to be cold when you arrive - a warmed-up engine can hide rough starts. Listen for the first three seconds: rattles, knocks, or a struggling crank are worth noting. Check the dashboard: every warning light should come on with ignition and go OFF after start.

The first mile: low-speed truths

Highway minutes

Get to 65 mph at least once. Feel for vibrations in the wheel (balance or worse), listen for wind and bearing noise, and try a committed - safe - acceleration to check power delivery. Use cruise control for a minute; it is a cheap electronics test.

The boring stuff that costs money

After the drive: three questions

One - can I see the Carfax? Two - what did your inspection cover and can I see notes or photos? Three - can my mechanic take a look? A seller who welcomes all three is telling you something good. At PilSStrem the answer to all three is yes by default - pick a car and book your slot online in two clicks.
